Power of Love

The title probably makes you think of Huey Lewis & the News and their popular song from 1985. The lyrics state that love is, “the power that makes the world go ’round.” Yet where does that love come from? Many believe that love is found within and that we create it based on a feeling or an event. Yet scripture tells us otherwise. Romans 5:5 says, “And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” God is love (I John 4:8) and He gives us His perfect love through the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, the world and the flesh corrupt that love and make it into something that defiles God rather than honors Him.

Are we giving love and receiving love, or are we demanding love? The giving and receiving of love comes through the Holy Spirit. Demanding love comes from our selfish flesh and taking our eyes off Jesus, turning away from the Spirit and focusing on the flesh. The world says we can fall in and out of love. God says love is a decision. I John 4:9 tells us that, “God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him.”
